Reflections of Roney Amos' Life
In 1928, Roney Amos was born on his father's birth date of August 23, to Sallie Lewis Amos and Theodore R. Amos in Ashley County, Arkansas. Roney was the first born of seven, four brothers and two sisters. He's survived by the middle child, Brother Dallas Amos and his "Baby Sister", Mattie B. Moore both of Camden, Arkansas. He has many nieces and nephews. When he was born, his parents farmed cotton and grew potatoes for the U S Army.
Roney enlisted for the draft on his 18th birthday in Hamburg, Arkansas, although exactly when he entered the U S Army is not certain. This is because the 1950 US census shows him living in Portland, AR. with parents and farming, along side Theodore Jr. Margarette, Dallas, Roby, Johny and Mattie.
Although WWII had been declared over in 1945, Roney said his troop was still being sent to fight small battles in Germany years later, traveling by night on trains and boats, and living in foxholes.
After Theo Sr.'s transition in July, 1953, Roney being located by the Red Cross a month later and being transported back to the US, two weeks after that, Roney moved with the family to Camden, but only stayed a few months.
Seems Roney had wrecked his car-fanatic brother's car and when it was time for brother Ted to return, Roney disappeared. He had the car repaired, but he knew it would not satisfy Ted. After he left Camden in 1953, his family did not hear from him for twenty plus years.
People who knew the Amoses in Portland or Montrose, would say "Talked to that Roney the other day here in Chicago", "He said you guys were doing well."
Then around 1979, his mother received a letter from Roney in which he said he was coming to see her. In those days, we had the same mailman who knew where his mother was living, although she had moved a couple of times from the old address.
Sure enough, there was Roney in Camden. He drove his mother to California where the other six siblings were living.
Roney loved reading his King James Version Bible until his vision blurred. He loved reciting Matthew 5:1-4. Around that time, Brother Dallas went to Chicago to bring him back to Camden.
Roney owned his first TV @ 90 years old, and his first phone when his nurse got him a cell phone. He said he kept taking the TV back because he didn't understand how to work it.
The Medical staff in Chicago was unaware Roney had any family.
His family wrote letters and called for many months and eventually hired a detective who located Roney in a couple of hours from his old address. He finally communicated, but told "Baby Sister" not to give his info to others. When asked "Why not Roney", he replied "I don't want to be bothered."
Roney is believed to be the oldest male Amos or Lewis. His
paternal Aunt Lydia Amos Sanders who walked the Appalachian Trail with her mother, brother and sister lived for 102 years. His maternal great aunt Lula Lewis Christensen lived 104 years.
Roney belonged to a faith healing mega church in Chicago whose pastor was also an Elvis look alike and impersonator.
Roney was a generous tither. He also went into the "Upper Room" to count hundreds of thousands in contributions.
He would say, "I'm almost a hundred years old." How long, sister?" who would respond, until "God says."
